THE national fencing team picked up one gold and one bronze at the 13th Malaysia Open Fencing Championships in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.
The gold was courtesy of Hjh Anis Sabrina Hj Yahya in the women's sabre event while Haziq Asahrin delivered the bronze in the men's sabre event at the Tan Sri Hamzah Arena.
Hjh Anis received a bye in the round of 32 before dispatching Singapore's He Jingyi 15-7 to advance to the quarter-finals.
She moved into the last-four after 15-10 with victory over Selangor's Natalie Wang.
Hjh Anis followed up with a 15-7 win over Almah Fauziah Ismail of Indonesia to progress into the title decider.
She then edged the top seed Nur Irdina Amani Imran 15-14 to finish top of the podium in a field of 22 contestants.
Over in the men's sabre event, Haziq got a bye in the last-32 before defeating Dylan Lee Jia Cheng 15-11 to advance to the quarters.
He booked his semis berth with a 15-3 triumph over Filipino Raphael Martin II Jimenez.
Haziq then faced another Filipino, Ricky Dhisullimah, and had to settle for the shared bronze after falling 15-12.
Brunei were represented by a total of six athletes - three men and three women - at the three-day competition.
Defending champion Anaqi Danish Asahrin fell in the last -16 while Adrian Wong was the other Bruneian in the men's event.
On the other hand, Dk Siti Syahirah Pg Idris was knocked out in the quarter-finals and Fatin Nurhayati Hj Mejenie in the last-32 in the women's category.
