BRUNEI bagged their first podium finish at SUKMA XXI in Kuching, Sarawak after wushu athlete Walid Lachkar won the bronze medal in the men’s changquan event on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old registered 9.580 points to finish third in the field of 24 participants at the Wushu Centre.
Penang claimed a one-two finish for the event with the gold medallist tallying 9.620 ahead of his teammate by 0.02 points.
A total of 61 athletes contesting in 11 sports are representing the Sultanate at the August 17 – 24 Games.
Besides wushu, the other sports that Brunei is competing in at Kuching are athletics, swimming, taekwondo, esports and chess.
Karate, fencing and pencak silat are held in Miri while netball and sepak takraw in Mukah and Bintulu respectively.
Brunei first competed at SUKMA in 1996 and the previous edition was in 2022 where they returned with two silver and two bronze medals.
