WALID Lachkar bagged Brunei's first ever wushu gold at SUKMA after winning the men's daoshu event in Kuching, Sarawak on Thursday.

His routine tallied a score of 9.613 points to blow away the rest of the 18-competitor field at the Wushu Centre.

Lee Ronn of Melaka followed in second place 0.020 points behind while Kwan Yin Jie completed the podium on 9.590 points.

Walid was delighted and dedicated the victory to his late mother, Hajah Rosnah binti Awg Tengah, who he lost in October 2022.

"All I want to say is that my achievements are dedicated to my late mother," said Walid in an interview with BruSports News.

"I'm also happy to be able to make everyone proud," he added.

The wushu competition at SUKMA XXI will come to an end on Friday.

Walid, who is already Brunei's most decorated athlete at the biennial Games having won bronze in the changquan event on Thursday, has a chance to add to his haul.

The 18-year-old will see action in the men's gunshu event.
