IT WAS weekend to savour for Low Leng May as she powered her way to the bronze medal at the Asia Obstacle Sports Championship 2024 in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
She clocked a personal best time of 1.51.95 to beat Hong Kong's Tung Mei Sze, who managed 2.25.65, for third place in the Female Open at Pavilion Bukit Jalil.
Filipino Janna Christel finished at the top of the podium with her time of 46.85 seconds edging compatriot Clana Fontaine by 3.56s.
This is only the third outside competition for Low, who only joined OCR in September, and she never expected such a result.
"I didn't have a lot of expectations because I didn't have enough overseas competition experience to know what to expect," said Low in an interview with BruSports News.
"But I went into it with a goal - to reach the top 10.
"Once I knew I qualified for the semi-finals, I really went all out for the bronze," she added.
When asked on what's next, Low replied: "Training and more training. My goal is to improve my efficiency and techniques on the course to shave off more time."
BARA (Brunei Adventure Recreation Association) President, Yasmin Patera is delighted with the results.
"We are very proud of the results and performances of all our athletes," said Yasmin.
"The course was the SEA Games 100m OCR course, but it was the first curved one we have ever encountered, presenting a unique challenge.
"Our athletes adapted remarkably well, demonstrating their resilience and skill," she added.
"We are especially pleased with Leng May’s third-place finish in the Women's Open, which highlights her dedication and hard work.
"This achievement is a testament to the rigorous training and unwavering spirit of our team.
"We look forward to continued success in future competitions," concluded Yasmin, who attended as team manager.
Brunei was represented by a total of eight athletes under head coach Rafie Saiful and coach Jess Yee at the July 19-21 competition.
Organised by the Malaysia Obstacle Race Sports Association (MORSA), a total of 140 athletes from around Asia, Iran, Australia and the US contested in the event.
