BRUNEI wushu athlete Basma Lachkar has been nominated for The World Games Athlete of the Year 2023.
This comes after she clinched a historic gold medal for Brunei at the World Games 2022 after winning the women's taijiquan and taijijian combined event at Birmingham, USA.
The 20-year-old followed that up with a silver medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last year - a first in any sport for the country.
"I was surprised to be nominated," said Basma in an interview with BruSports News on Wednesday.
"It is probably a once in a life time moment, and I feel honoured to be chosen as the wushu athlete," she added.
Voting is ongoing and started at 8pm (Brunei Time) on 10th January.
From 22nd January at 8pm, only the 10 highest ranked candidates at that time will continue in the race and will re-start with 0 votes.
Voting ends on 31st January at 8pm.
Votes for the candidates can be given on The World Games website once every 24 hours.
Votes must be given each time to two candidates: 2 votes to your first-choice candidate and 1 vote to your second-choice candidate.
Votes will not be registered if only given to one candidate.
