Records tumble at 7th Brunei Open & Masters Swimming Championships

THERE were 11 new national short course records set during the 7th Brunei Open & Masters Swimming Championships over the weekend.

Hayley Wong shone the brightest as she swam her way to six of them - all gold medals - at the ISB Pool in Salambigar.

Flying the flag for Dolphin Swimming Club, she started off with the 400m freestyle event with a time of 4:49.78.

She then finished the 50m freestyle event on 27.26 seconds.

The 15-year-old completed the 100m freestyle event clocking 59.93s on the second day of action.

She then notched a time of 2:28.86 in the 200m Individual medley followed by a time of 28.78s in the 50m butterfly.

Wong wrapped up her campaign by clinching the 100m individual medley with a record time of 1:07.03.

National teammate Zeke Chan also had a splendid outing with four new records.

He smashed the old record by 5.72 seconds in the men's 400m freestyle after coming in at 4:08.06 on the opening day.

He then blitzed the 50m freestyle with a time of 52.05s and rewrote the 50m backstroke record with his swim of 57.23s.

His other record was in the 200m Individual medley after he returned with a time of 2:10.22.

On the other hand, Joel Ling set the last record in the men's 50m backstroke event.

Swimming under the banner of Brunei Speed Swimming Club, he clocked a time of 27.22s to finish top of the podium.
