Chan breaks 100m backstroke national record

ZEKE Chan (Pictured L) swam to a new national record in the men's 100m backstroke event at the World Aquatics Championships in Japan on Monday.

The 15-year-old finished sixth in Heat 2 with a time of 59.61 seconds at the Marine Messe in Fukuoka.

The time beats his previous record of 59.68s, which he produced at the SEA Age Group Swimming Championships in Kuala Lumpur back in December.

He also contested in the men's 100m freestyle event on Wednesday where he clocked 55.37s.

His personal best stands at 54.99s for the event.

Hayley Wong was the first Bruneian to see action at the July 23 - 30 competition.

She swam in the women's 100m butterfly on Sunday and finished with a time of 1:09.52.

Wong will be back in the pool on Thursday for the 100m freestyle event.

Joel Ling is the other swimmer flying the flag for Brunei and he will contest in the men's 200m backstroke and 50m freestyle events.
