IT WAS a rollercoaster ride for Liverpool FC in the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Liverpool overcame Crystal Palace 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday to secure a third place finish and claim a Champions League spot for next season.

In a game where they welcomed back 10,000 fans, Sadio Mane scored in either half to get the Reds over the line.

Having sat at the top of the table at the end of 2020, things took a downturn for the Merseyside club in the new year.

Liverpool were on a freefall and succumbed to their sixth straight home defeat on March 7 after losing 1-0 to Fulham.

The losing streak comes after the club’s longest unbeaten home run in the league of 68 games, which ran from April 2017 to January 2021.

Despite losing their defensive players to injury, their woes wasn’t because of their backline but they had stopped scoring.

Liverpool failed to find the back of the net in 115 shots - excluding penalties and own goals - at Anfield.

At that point, Liverpool were 10 points behind Leicester City and a Champions League spot almost looked impossible.

However, Liverpool went on a mission and in their last 10 games conjured up eight wins and two draws.

This was largely due to Fabinho playing in his midfield role and it is no coincidence that points dropped in the two games, the Brazilian was playing in defence with Nat Phillips out due to injury.

The run in is definitely memorable for Liverpool fans as they recorded a 4-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford - their first since 2014.

The following game saw shotstopper Alisson Becker head home the winner against West Brom late into stoppage time.

Alisson became only the sixth goalkeeper to get on the scoresheet in the history of the competition and the first headed goal.

Phillips made himself a cult hero amongst the Liverpool faithful after he scored his first goal for the Reds against Burnley and provided a goal line clearance at the other end.

It was sort of a perfect end to a disappointing season for Jurgen Klopp’s men and with the injured stalwarts returning, we can definitely expect brighter things to come next season.
