THE National Basketball League, just like every other sports competition in the country, was suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
However, there was no shortage of talent with some young blood being able to take to the floor against men at the BBA court in Batu Bersurat.
The youngest player in the League is 13-year-old Jaron On (pic) of Tutong and he hopes playing in the league will improve his game.
“It is a very good experience because it is more intense and the speed of the game is faster. Overall, it will definitely improve my game,” said On in an interview with BruSports News recently.
“The best thing I have learned from the league is that you have to be faster, more physical and be more focused during the game,” he added.
“I also want to improve my basketball skills and try to be better than how I played before,” continued the Jerudong International School (JIS) student, who idolises national point guard Eugene Choo Yung Jian.
When asked on what kind of advice he has received from seasoned players, he replied: “ Never give up, stay humble, don’t have a bad attitude and always respect everyone.”
On also went on to thank the people who have helped him to get to where he is today.
“I would like you to thank my Tutong coach Oswin, my schools coaches - Mr Hamilton, Mr Temmar and Mr Villanueva, and Coach Ben (Hj Aeide Sowerdey Hj Abu Hassan) for guiding me in all these years although I haven’t achieved anything in basketball yet,” said On.
“I promise to train hard and make you proud. I also want to thank my father for his endless support and reward him for his faith in me,” he added.
Nathan Chiew is another standout playing for Brunei-Muara A. Despite his small frame, he has the ability to drive to the hoop without fear and has good shooting range.
The 14-year-old, who started playing basketball at the age of eight, is enjoying the ride.
“My experience playing against older opponents definitely gives me more pressure on the court but i also learn many new things,” said Chiew.
“I think the best thing I have learned playing in the league is to communicate and play as a team no matter what,” he added.
When asked on what aims he has set for himself, Chiew replied: “To help my team and my teammates as much as I can when I’m on the court.
“I know always to play hard, smart and always play as a team,” concluded the James Harden fan.
