IT HAS been 18 years since Brunei last sent a swim team to compete at the SEA Games and the duo of Muhammad Isa Ahmad and Nur Haziq Samil are looking to make it count.
Muis is set to compete in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events while Haziq in the 100m and 200m backstroke events at the Aquatics Centre in New Clark City.
Muis, who is coming off competing at the FINA World Swiming Championships in Doha last month, is delighted to experience representing the country as part of the contingent.
“It has been a while but it feels great and nice to know that finally we will be sending a swim team after all these years,” said Muis in a recent interview with BruSports News.
“I’ve been a representative for other competitions such as the World Champs but it is nice to finally be part of a contingent.
“There is a lot of pressure since this is the first (SEA Games) in a long time and I will give it whatever I have,” he added.
When asked on what targets he set for himself, Muis replied: “I would like to improve my time, which is the national record. That would be ideal.
“I’m not expecting to say I will go for gold as that is what we are all doing.
“I will just give my 100% effort as this is the last competition of the year and hope to perform to my best,” he added.
On the other hand, Haziq is based in Phuket, Thailand where he trains at the Thanyapura Resort under the FINA development scholarship.
He is in a positive mood and is hoping to set some new personal bests.
“I hope to at least be able to improve my personal records for both events,” said Haziq.
“In terms of training I have been working hard with at the FINA Development Programme Training in Phuket, Thailand and I feel that with continuous training, it will have results for me and the country in the long term,” he concluded.
Both swimmers will take to the pool for their first events tomorrow.
