IT WAS a great start for the national wushu team after they bagged two gold medals on the opening day of the 10th Asian Junior Wushu Championships at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas yesterday.
The result already bettered their haul from the previous edition in South Korean last year when they returned home with one gold and one silver medal courtesy of Majdurano Joel Majallah Sain.
This time he teamed up with and Mohammad Safiee Shayferan to defeat seven other countries to finish top of the podium in the boy’s duel event with a score of 9.55 points.
Hong Kong’s Kwok Kwan Ho and Leung Yat Sing settled for second place with 9.35 points while Cai Bo Ren and Huang Wen Sheng of Chinese-Taipei claimed third spot a further 0.04 points behind.
The Sultanate won their second gold medal from the girl’s duel event after defeating five other countries.
The pair of Nur Batrisyia Ripin and Ling Dexuan scored 9.33 points just 0.03 ahead of second-placed Yim Wing Tung and Lau Po Yan of Hong Kong.
Iran’s pairing of Fatemah Jazini and Monireh Panahi Dorcheh completed the podium with 9.23 points.
This is the first time that Brunei is hosting a wushu event at this level and it is organised by the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam with the support of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports.
The hosts are represented by a total of 13 athletes - with Aaron Jinyi Phung, Abel Lim wen Yuen, Walid Lachkar, Lim Wei Jun, Hosea Wong Zheng Yu, Basma Lachkar, Lim Yee Sean, Chiam Ziqi and Li Ziyan being the others.
The competition will be held till Friday and is divided into three sessions: 8.30am - 11am, 2.30pm - 5pm and 7pm - 10pm. Members of the public are welcome to spectate the event.
