BRUNEI will return from the 66th Sarawak Open Athletics Championships with one gold and two silver medals.
Maziah Mahusin was the biggest winner after bagging one gold and one silver medals over the weekend.
She won the gold in the women’s 100m event after crossing the line with a time of 13.21 seconds ahead of Labuan’s Nurfatieah Abdullah 0.15s behind.
Maziah had made it into the final after winning her semis on 13.10s at the Sarawak Stadium.
However, Nurfatieah got the better of her in their second meeting by claiming gold in the women’s 200m.
It was a photo finish where both Maziah and Nurfatieah clocked an identical time of 27.18s.
Maziah had won her semis with a time of 27.82s.
Brunei’s first female Olympian was delighted with her performance.
“I’m happy with the result as I’m slowly getting back to my personal best,” said Maziah in an interview with BruSports News earlier today.
“I’m looking forward to more competition to break records and win medals,” she added.
Md Faaizul Abdullah was the other podium finisher for Brunei at the April 13-14 competition.
He had won his semis with a time of 11.10s but finished second in the final despite going faster clocking 10.92s.
“I’m happy with my result for both the runs. I was just targeting a season’s best but unexpectedly broke my personal best after two years,” said Faaizul.
“I’m now looking forward to compete in more tournaments and hopefully we able to break more PBs this year,” he added.
The duo of Azman Kiai and Md Adenin Bolhan were the other two Bruneians at the competition.
Azwan contested in both the men’s 100m and 200m events but didn’t qualify for the final.
As for Adenin, he managed a distance of 35.19m for the discus throw event.
