Tutong fend off Brunei-Muara for victory

TUTONG avenged their opening loss to Brunei-Muara in the women’s category of the National Basketball League after holding on for a 46-41 win last night at the BBA court in Batu Bersurat.

Both teams had met on Sunday with Brunei-Muara claiming a 42-35 victory at the Tutong Chung Hwa basketball court.

The duo of Lee Wei Theen and Hong Lan Jie carried Tutong at the offensive end with match game-highs of 13 points apiece.

On the other hand, Vanessa Pang topcored for Brunei-Muara with 12 points while Tong Sing Ching was the other in double figures with 11 to her name in a losing effort.

With Tutong on the ascendancy from tip off they opened up a double digit lead with four minutes left in the second period after a basket courtesy of Hong to make it 21-11.

Brunei-Muara struggled from the field and broke their drought late in the second period after a layup by Pang.

However, they faced an uphill battle with the scoreboard reading 25-15 at the break.

Brunei-Muara came out strongly to start the second half as they dominated the boards and started knocking down shots.

They used an 8-0 run to get to within a single possession at 31-28.

Tutong managed to regain their composure to get back to extend the gap to seven points against before a three-point play by Tong made it 37-33 heading into the final stanza.

The game remained close and was finally tied at 41 apiece after a basket by Tong with two minutes to play.

But that was the last time that Brunei-Muara added to the scoresheet.

They were hurt by turnovers and a jumpshot by captain Chris Tan to make it a two-possession game with under a minute left sealed victory for Tutong.

The second game saw Temburong cruise to an 83-47 triumph over Seria in the men’s competition.
