Brunei shine at Special Olympics World Games

SPECIAL Oympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) will return from the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi with one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Muhammad Haziman Azrul Muhd Nurudin was the biggest winner after he won the country’s only gold medal in the 200m event at the Dubai Police Club Stadium on Sunday.

Hizam Budiman Anak Kasin got on the podium twice after winning the silver medal in the men’s shot put event and followed that up with a third place finish in the 200m event.

Brunei’s other silver medal was courtesy of Dayangku Nur Amal Rashidah Pengiran Abd Rahman in the 200m event on Saturday.

Nur Hafizah Irdina Saini also competed in the race and finished in fourth position.

Amal Farwizah Hj Ibrahim claimed another bronze medal from the F04 shot put event while the SOBD Brunei MIB team closed out the Games with a third-place finish in the Dance Sports Competition today.

SOBD had sent a total of nine athletes – with Nur Syahmimi Asqina Safieh, Awangku Muhammad Nur Rahmanruddin Pengiran Abdul Rahman, Muhamma Faiz Sapar and Syamsiah Takong being others – to compete in both athletics and bowling at the March 14-21 Games.

They were part of over 7,000 athletes from over 170 nations that participate at the Games in the UAE.
