MUHAMMAD Isa Ahmad signed off 2018 in style after producing two new national open short course records at the recently concluded 14th FINA World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China.
He first broke the 100m breaststroke record on Tuesday after finishing his heat in second place with a time of 1:04.45 beating his previous best by 0.41s set at the same competition two years ago in Windsor, Canada.
Muis then followed that up with a new record in the 50m breaststroke event after completing it with a time of 29.65s at the Dec 11-16 event.
It betters his previous record by 0.25s also set at the same tournament two years ago.
“It was icing on the cake when Muis lowered the 50m breaststroke timing after breaking the 100m breaststroke record on Tuesday,” said Ang Beng Siong, the honorary secretary of BASA as the accompanying team manager, in a press statement.
“A nice way to cap off the season for the year. He is a FINA scholarship holder whereby FIA has provided opportunity for him to have access to high level performance training and it is no bearing its fruit,” he added.
Christian NIkles was the other swimmer who flew the flag for Brunei at the competition in the 50m and 100m freestyle events.
He was close to setting a new national record in the 50m event after clocking 23.86s which is just 0.1s slower than his previous best.
The tournament concludes this year's calendar of events and the duo has their eyes set on the 18th FINA World Championships (long course) slated to be held in July next year in Gwangju, South Korea.
