THE national under-22 football team were swept aside 6-0 by Myanmar in Group A of the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur earlier today.

The result means that Myanmar are the first team through to the semi-finals of the competition with a maximum of nine points from three matches.

On the other hand, Brunei are without a point and are staring at elimination after two games.

Myanmar broke the deadlock in the 24th minute after Hlaing Bo Bo threaded a ball to send Aung Thu behind the Brunei backline to put the ball past shotstopper Haimie Anak Nyaring at the UiTM Stadium.

It was 2-0 five minutes before the halftime whistle after Shwe Ko cut back for skipper Si Thu Aung to fire home.

It started pouring in the second half and Myanmar needed 28 minutes to add to their tally after substitute Aung Kaung Mann tapped home a low cross from the right from close range.

He scored his second of the game nine minutes later after his initial shot was blocked off the line by a Bruneian defender but he made no mistake on the rebound.

Despite leading by four goals, Myanmar didn’t let up and added two more in stoppage time.

Mg Mg Lwin got his name on the scoresheet after being sent through on goal and Thang Paing completed the rout after chipping an onrushing Haimie.

Brunei will continue their campaign against Laos, who fell 2-0 to Singapore in the other match, on Monday.
