BRUNEI started their campaign at the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan with the karate event yesterday

Md Fida’iy Hj Sanif, who was the flag bearer during the opening ceremony, received a bye in the first round of the men’s kumite -60kg event.

He was then stopped in his tracks 6-0 by local boy Farzaliyev Firdovsi in the second round to see his campaign come to an end at the Baku Sports Complex.

It was always going to be a difficult affair for the national karateka considering that Firdovsi is a gold medallist in the event during the 1st European Games two years ago.

National sprinter Md Noor Firdaus Ar-Rasyid Hj Mohd Idris is the other athlete at the Games and he will compete in the men’s 200m event on Wednesday.

He has set his sights on breaking his own national record of 21.64s set during the Malaysian Open in October last year.

Brunei returned with a silver medal from the last edition in Palembang, Indonesia in 2013 after wushu brothers Md Sufi Shayiran and Mohammad Adi Sya’rani finished second in the duilian (duo sparring with broad sword and spear) event.
