BRUNEI ended their campaign at the 1st ASEAN University Fencing Championship in Malaysia with one silver and one bronze medals.
Contested at Nilai University, both podium finishes came on Friday with Hjh Anis Sabrina Hj Yahya of Cosmopolitan College delivering silver in the individual women’s epee event and Hardiwan Shah Rahim of Kemuda Institute bagging the bronze in the individual men’s sabre event.
Sofhi Idris of Cosmopolitan College and Firdaus Hj Rashid of IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal College saw action in the individual men’s epee event on Saturday and were knocked out in the second round.
Over in the individual men’s foil event yesterday, Hadi Hj Shawal of IBTE College of Business defeated Edwin Lim Hwa Ling of One Academy (Malaysia) 15-8 to advance into the quarter-finals.
He was then stopped in his tracks 15-9 by Chim Theara of Western University (Cambodia).
Qawi Iskandar of Cosmopolitan College was the other in action for the event and he was ousted in the second round after falling 15-9 to Sopanut Mayakam of Nilai University.
Captain (U) Nashriq Moksin, the Brunei Darussalam Fencing Federation (BDFF) secretary general, was pleased with the overall result and hoped that they will be able to take another step forward from this.
“We are content with the result, hopefully we can improve more and move forward from here on,” said Nashriq in a press release.
“We see good progress in the fencers and will work out the strengths and weaknesses to prepare them for the next competition in mid April,” he added.
“Lastly, we would like to thank the institutions, JBS, SMRC and parents for the continuous support in the development of this sport.” concluded Nashriq.
